Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Procure brain tissue from the University of Iowa’s Decedent Care Center and other sources.
  • Coordinate, carry-out, and interpret neuropathological assessment of donated cases, including gross and histological examination and immunohistochemistry.
  • Maintain and implement the human brain tissue database and prepare draft neuropathologic reports for research purposes.
  • Identify, retrieve, dissect, and disburse requested clinical samples approved by the core director.
  • Provide advice and guidance to core users, including troubleshooting techniques.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of core students, assistants, staff, faculty, and intra- and extramural collaborators.
  • Work with the Director to ensure adequate updating and organization of protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Administrative and project management, including usage, billing, research supply ordering, and routine cleaning/maintenance for the core facility.
  • May be designated safety coordinator for the facility.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master (required) and PhD (preferred) in pathology, neuroscience, molecular or cellular biology or a related field or equivalent amount of education and experience.
  • Strong organizational, communication and time management skills.
  • Experience in working with human biological samples
  • Experience with human neuroanatomy and/or neuropathology
  • Ability to communicate with patients, donors, and general public about human brain research
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills and ability to work independently.
